What the Sheriff of Cumberland County actually does
More people vote for sheriff than can say what the job covers. In North Carolina it is a great deal more than patrol cars — and most of it never makes the news.
It is an elected office, not a hired one
The sheriff is elected countywide to a four-year term. That is the difference people miss: a police chief is hired by a city manager and can be let go by one, while a sheriff answers to the voters of the county and to nobody else. It is why a sheriff’s election is worth paying attention to, and why the office can be hard to change from the outside between elections.
The largest part of the job is the jail
The sheriff runs the county detention center. In Cumberland County that is roughly $22.4 million a year, budgeted separately from the sheriff’s office itself, and it covers everyone held before trial — their medical care, their supervision, and their safety while the county has custody of them. Add the sheriff’s office budget of about $36.2 million and the next sheriff is responsible for something near $58.6 million a year.
And then everything else
Deputies are the primary law enforcement for everyone living outside a town’s police jurisdiction, and the office runs criminal investigations countywide. It serves civil papers, carries out evictions and court orders, and provides security for the courthouse. It assigns school resource officers. It issues concealed handgun permits and maintains the county’s sex offender registry. Most of that work is invisible until it touches you directly.
Why it matters this year
Cumberland County has an open seat. Sheriff Ennis Wright retired in June 2025, the commissioners appointed a successor to finish the term, and that appointee lost his own party’s primary in March. For the first time since 2016 there is no sitting sheriff on the ballot — whoever wins on November 3 inherits an agency in the middle of a leadership change.
